The trucking company, the driver, the company that loaded the cargo and the manufacturer of a failed part are all separate targets, and working out which of them is responsible is most of the case.

The evidence is different too. A truck records things a car does not, and those records belong to a company that has no reason to hand them over unless someone asks in the right way, quickly.

Four things carry most truck cases. The black box, which is the event data recorder that logs speed, braking and movement. The driver's logs, which record hours behind the wheel and breaks taken. The carrier's own maintenance and safety records. And the driver's history, including licensing and prior violations.

All four are held by the trucking company, and retention schedules are short. The sooner someone sends a preservation demand, the more of it still exists when it is needed. That is the single strongest reason not to wait on a truck case.

More parties than most people expect. The employer, if the driver was working or if the company cut corners on training, maintenance or safety. The cargo company, if the load was packed or secured badly enough to shift. The manufacturer, if a part such as a brake failed or had been recalled. Sometimes more than one at once.

Finding all of them matters because each one may bring its own insurance policy, and the policies are what a recovery is actually paid from.

Expect that call fast, often within a day or two, and expect it to be friendly. A commercial carrier's insurer sends people to the scene as a matter of routine, and their job is to limit what the claim costs.
